Clamp-style couplings attach an encoder shaft to another rotating shaft to transfer rotation between the shafts in a precise manner. They also reduce wear and tear on bearings that can lead to costly maintenance and reduced life of your encoder. Using Control-Flex couplings will help extend the operational life of your encoder and guarantee accuracy.

Clamp Style Flex Coupling Features

The construction of a Control-Flex Coupling consists of two hubs (that attach to the shafts) and a center flex member. This flexible element is affixed to the hubs through pins. Clamp-style hubs provide a positive, secure shaft connection. The clamp-style Control-Flex Couplings are available with a single flex disc for standard torque capacity, or with two flex discs for increased torque capacity, torsional stiffness, and length.

Specification range for double disc couplings

  • maximum parallel shaft misalignments of 0.009” to 0.037”
  • maximum peak torque of 10 in-lbs to 650 in-lbs
  • maximum speed of 4,000 to 10,000 RPM

Specification range for single disc couplings

  • maximum parallel shaft misalignments of 0.013” to 0.055”
  • maximum peak torque of 6 in-lbs. to 361 in-lbs.
  • maximum speed of 5,000 to 12,000 RPM

The clamp-style hub models come standard without keyways. Keyways and special modifications are available upon request. View the individual product specifications below for additional information.

Choosing the Right Clamp-Style Coupling

To make sure you are choosing the correct size clamp style coupling for your encoder or machinery, you first need to identify your application’s requirements for torque, misalignment, and service factor, then find a coupling from the options below based on those requirements. Next, you will need to compute the misalignment ratio and torque ratio using the selection procedures we have provided on page 7 of our product brochure, then use the chart to compare the ratios to the coupling’s operating envelope.

If the ratios for your application fall into of the shaded area, exceeding maximum values of your chosen coupling, you will need to select the next size up and redo the calculations to ensure you are choosing the proper coupling.
