SUMMARY Sets-up, operates and instructs less skilled machinists on various machine tools of a complex nature, with little or no supervision by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Sets-up, edits and operates CNC machine.

Maintains set-up sheets for new parts or design changes.

Selects proper tooling for different machining sequences.

Instructs less skilled operators.

Performs finishing work such as, deburring, sanding, etc.

Maintains a clean and safe workplace.
 

QUALIFICATIONS  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Associate's degree and 5-7 years experience with equipment of a complex nature; or 8-10 years experience with equipment of a complex nature.  The operator must be highly proficient at set-up, operation, determining tooling, process sequences, speeds and feeds, shop mathematics, and thorough on inspection of parts and instruction to others. 
 

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to communicate effectively with employees of the organization.
 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to perform basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
 

REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to walk and talk or hear.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
 

COMMENTS  This is the top-level machinist position.  Employees at this level should be highly proficient with all less complex machines in the shop before obtaining this level.  Programming is not a prerequisite for this position, but is a plus.
